The Saturn Vue, completely redesigned for 2008, makes history just one model year into its launch when the 2009 Saturn Vue 2 Mode Hybrid goes into production in late 2008. It is expected to be the world’s most fuel-efficient V-6 SUV, providing an estimated 50-percent increase in fuel economy compared to the non-hybrid Vue XR.
The Saturn Vue 2 Mode Hybrid will be the second hybrid model in the Vue family and the third hybrid offering among all 2009 Saturns.
A compact five-door crossover SUV with Saturn’s new European-inspired design and sporty ride and handling, the 2009 Vue is available in XE and XR models, as well as the Red Line model, aimed at performance-minded drivers. In addition to the new 2 Mode Hybrid, Saturn offers a Vue Hybrid model that features the affordable GM Hybrid System.
‘Part of being a customer-centric brand means offering consumers choices that meet their priorities as well as their budgets,’ said Saturn General Manager Jill Lajdziak. ‘With three engines, front- and all-wheel-drive choices and, now, two available hybrid models, we have ensured that the Vue appeals to a wide variety of customers.’
Powertrains
No other vehicle in the segment offers as wide a range of engine choices as the 2009 Vue. The XE FWD and Hybrid four-cylinder models are equipped with the 2.4L Ecotec DOHC engine with variable valve timing. It produces 172 horsepower (128 kW)* and 167 lb.-ft. of torque (218 Nm)* in the XE.
All-wheel-drive Vue XE models are equipped with a 3.5L V-6 engine that delivers 222 horsepower (166 kW) at 5,900 rpm* and 219 lb.-ft. (297 Nm) of torque at 3,200 rpm,* with a broad torque curve and good low-end torque for quick acceleration.
Vue XR and Vue Red Line are powered by GM’s sophisticated, high-feature 60-degree dual overhead cam 3.6L V-6 VVT that delivers 257 horsepower (192 kW) at 6,500 rpm* and 248 lb.-ft. (336 Nm) of torque at 2,100 rpm.*
All Vue V-6 models are equipped with a GM Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic transmission, which further helps maximize powertrain performance and economy. The 2.4L-equipped models are mated to the Hydra-Matic four-speed, electronically controlled transaxle.
Interior
Rich materials and precise fit and finish bring an upscale feel to the Vue cabin. Designers used lighter colors to give it a greater sense of spaciousness, and provided a host of comfort and convenience features, many of which are uncommon in the segment.
They include an optional eight-way power driver’s seat; standard flip-down second-row armrest with storage; standard CD stereo with MP3 capability; available automatic climate control system with electronic controls and available navigation system with voice recognition. An optional Convenience Package includes an automatic rain-sensing wiper system, heated windshield washer system, remote start, heated front cloth seats and universal home remote.
For 2009, the Vue’s Driver Information Center is enhanced on all models to include tire pressure monitor data, fuel economy range, instant fuel economy readout, oil life monitor, personalization options and a host of warning messages.
For ease of selection, green graphics have been added on the HVAC control head to designate the optimal climate control settings to enable maximum fuel economy.
More connectivity and entertainment
The 2009 Vue includes standard OnStar 7.2 hardware that includes Bluetooth hands-free telephone connectivity. Bluetooth is standard on XR and Red Line models and available on XE when the Convenience Package is ordered.
Enhancements to the OnStar system also enable customers to download Directions & Connections information directly to navigation system-equipped Vue models, providing visual turn-by-turn location directions. In addition, XM real-time traffic information can be displayed on the navigation screen for a nominal monthly charge.
To keep rear-seat occupants entertained on both short and long trips, 2009 Vue models offer a dealer-installed, headrest-integrated DVD entertainment system through Saturn Accessories.
Storage
Saturn understands that even a compact SUV needs ample storage room to accommodate the way customers use their vehicles today. Designers made sure the interior included plenty of places for gear, including covered and damped storage compartments and an oversized glove box. Storage and cargo-carrying capabilities include:
• A folding rear-seat center armrest with storage
• Flat-folding 60/40-split rear seatback for accommodating large items
• A rear cargo management system, available through Saturn Accessories, features removable, adjustable upper and lower rails and storage nets to contain a variety of items
• Storage beneath the cargo load floor
A Flex Net cargo system is added to the Preferred Package, standard on XR and Red Line and available on XE.
Ride and handling
At the core of the Vue’s European-inspired driving character is a stiff, steel body-frame integral structure. Ride and handling is augmented by one of four levels of specific spring-rate and wheel-travel tuning: Red Line, XE/XR with a V-6, XE with four-cylinder-engine or Hybrid. Front and rear stabilizer bars, MacPherson strut independent front suspension and independent multi-link rear suspension, along with an isolated engine cradle, add to the specifically tuned ride.
Hydraulic power-assisted steering on V-6 models, standard four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, standard traction control and standard GM StabiliTrak electronic stability control provide outstanding vehicle control.
For 2009, Saturn adds standard Panic Brake Assist technology. Because many drivers do not brake hard enough in an emergency stopping maneuver, this technology automatically develops maximum brake boost when it senses a driver is attempting to make an emergency stop.
A towing package with hitch and wiring is available on all Vues. When properly equipped, the Vue can tow up to 3,500 pounds (1,587 kg). Electronic Trailer Sway Control, a feature integrated into the standard StabiliTrak system, is a towing stabilization system that uses active braking to help control the vehicle in trailering situations. Unique to the compact crossover segment, it detects the occurrence of trailer sway that may be caused by improper trailer weight balance or excessive vehicle speed.
Upon detecting trailer sway, StabiliTrak will begin to apply the brakes, independent of the driver applying the brake pedal, to assist the driver in stabilizing the vehicle. The StabiliTrak activation telltale will flash to signal the driver to reduce vehicle speed. If trailer sway continues, StabiliTrak will reduce engine torque to reduce the speed of the vehicle.
The Vue XE, XR and four-cylinder hybrid can also be towed as an RV ‘dinghy vehicle’ with all four wheels on the ground.
Safety
In addition to handling features such as StabiliTrak that help drivers avoid crashes, the Vue helps protect occupants with its high-strength steel structure and a long list of standard occupant-protection safety features. Dual-stage front-seat air bags, front-seat side thorax air bags and rollover capable head curtain air bags covering front and rear rows are standard on all models.
Other standard Vue safety features include front-row safety belt pretensioners, Pedal Release System, active head restraints, tire pressure monitoring system, automatic power door locks and side turn signal lamps.
Like all Saturn vehicles, the Vue comes standard with GM’s OnStar safety and security system, including a one-year subscription to the Safe & Sound plan. The OnStar service includes an Advanced Crash Response System. It makes crash data available to emergency services so that they can potentially dispatch life-saving personnel and equipment to crash scenes sooner.
If the vehicle is in a crash that activates an air bag, the system automatically notifies an OnStar advisor, who will contact the occupants and summon emergency help if necessary. OnStar also provides remote door-unlocking service and can assist authorities in locating a vehicle if it is reported stolen.
Exterior
The Vue’s exterior exhibits Saturn’s new European-inspired design cues, with a look that is clean, sculpted and distinctively sporty. Tight wheel-to-body relationships, large headlamps and a sweeping upper profile line contribute to the Vue’s striking design.
One especially distinctive design cue is the fender accent molding located vertically along the forward front door line. This styling feature is molded in charcoal color – or trimmed in chrome, with the available Chrome Package – and incorporates a side repeater turn signal. Also part of the Chrome Package for V-6-equipped Vue models are front and rear chrome skid plates and chrome roof rails.
For 2009, Vue XE models get molded in charcoal-color door handles while XR, Hybrid and Red Line models receive chrome handles and chrome side fender vents. Brightwork surrounding the side glass adds to the appeal of the vehicle’s profile.
Sixteen-inch alloy wheels are standard on XE models, while larger 17-inch alloy wheels come with the uplevel Vue XR. XE and XR models are further distinguished from each other with specific fascias, rockers and wheel opening trim. All V-6 models include dual chrome exhaust.
New exterior colors include Quicksilver, Gold Mist, Aquamarine and Chili Pepper Red.
Vue Hybrid
The 2009 Vue Hybrid provides consumers with a more affordable hybrid option that also provides fuel savings and uncompromised utility. Rated equivalent to an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV), the Vue Hybrid produces 172 horsepower (128 kW) and 167 lb.-ft. (226 Nm) of torque.
The Vue Hybrid achieves EPA fuel economy of 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. Highway driving range is 585 miles on a single tank of fuel.
The GM Hybrid system on the Vue Hybrid combines sophisticated controls with an electric motor/generator mated to a 2.4L Ecotec DOHC VVT four-cylinder engine and a modified four-speed automatic transmission. The system saves fuel by providing an electric power assist during acceleration; shutting off the engine at idle; early fuel cut-off during deceleration and capturing energy through regenerative braking.
As the Vue Hybrid shares an exterior design similar to the other Vue models, new ‘Hybrid’ decals on the upper windshield, rear window and doors add to its visual differentiation.
Vue Red Line
The Vue Red Line features an aggressive front-end design, including a large, lower air opening and projector beam fog lamps. The rear of the vehicle features a special fascia, spoiler and chrome trapezoid exhaust tips. A lowered suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels and Red Line badges complete the aggressive appearance.
For a more engaging driving experience, the Red Line comes with standard tap up/tap down transmission control and sport-tuned ride and handling. It is powered by a dual overhead cam 3.6L V-6 VVT engine that delivers an estimated 257 horsepower (192 kW) at 6,500 rpm and 248 lb.-ft. (336 Nm) of torque at 2,100 rpm. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The Vue Red Line is available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
Interior modifications include a Red Line-exclusive ebony interior, including leather sport seats with red stitching and perforated suede fabric inserts. The vehicle also features unique Red Line instrument cluster graphics and embroidered floor mats.
